FAQs

  • Trust your instincts - If you're wondering about your child's communication, it's worth having a conversation!

Here are some signs that may indicate speech therapy could help:

    For toddlers (18 months - 3 years):

    • Limited vocabulary for their age (fewer than 50 words by age 2, fewer than 200 words by age 3)

    • Difficulty combining words into phrases

    • Hard to understand even for family members

    • Frequent frustration when trying to communicate

    • Not following simple instructions consistently

    For preschoolers (3-5 years):

    • Speech that's difficult for strangers to understand

    • Leaving out sounds in words or substituting sounds incorrectly

    • Difficulty answering simple questions

    • Trouble with basic grammar (like using "me go" instead of "I go")

    • Avoiding talking or becoming frustrated during conversations

    For school-age children:

    • Struggles with specific sounds (like /r/, /s/, or /th/)

    • Difficulty organizing thoughts

    • Trouble following multi-step directions

    • Challenges with reading or writing that may relate to language skills

Every child develops at their own pace, but Early intervention often leads to the best outcomes.

  • Your child's first session is designed to be comfortable and informative

Before we start: I'll review any paperwork you've completed and discuss your specific concerns and goals for your child.

During the evaluation (about 45-60 minutes):

    • I'll observe how your child communicates naturally through play and conversation

    • We'll work through age-appropriate activities that help me assess their speech and language skills

    • For younger children, this looks like playing with toys, books, and games

    • For older children, we might do more structured activities like storytelling or following directions

    • I'll take notes on speech sounds, vocabulary, grammar, and how your child understands and uses language

What your child will experience: Fun! We're just playing and talking together

By the end of the session:

    • I'll share my initial observations

    • Discuss whether therapy is recommended

    • If so, I'll outline a treatment plan tailored to your child's needs

    • You'll have a clear understanding of next steps and home practice ideas

After the session: I'll provide a written report within a few days that includes my findings and recommendations

  • Every child is unique, and therapy duration depends on several factors:

    • The type and severity of the communication challenge

    • Your child's age (younger children often respond faster with consistent intervention)

    • How regularly we meet and practice at home

    • Your child's motivation and engagement

    • Consistency between home and therapy activities

    Typical timeframes I see:

    • Articulation (speech sound) disorders: 3-12 months for single sounds, longer for multiple sounds or patterns

    • Early language delays: 6-18 months, depending on the gap and age at which we start

    • Social communication goals: 6 months to 2 years, depending on complexity

What to expect along the way:

    • We'll review progress every 4-6 weeks

    • You'll see gradual improvements, not overnight changes

    • I'll adjust our approach based on how your child responds

My commitment to you: I believe in efficient, effective therapy. We'll work toward goals systematically, and I'll keep you informed about progress!
